Tiers of the Cake

A tasty slice of inspiration...

Hello foodies,

A huge warm welcome to Red Velvet Baking, the blog! I have been baking since I can remember and I have always wanted to share my experiences and tasty flair beyond the walls of my own home. In summer 2011 I launched this little blog. I blog as a celebration of my achievements and dedication to my culinary passion, alongside an overflow of my enthusiasm, with a few added delicious recipe ideas. Pictures and tips galore, sure enough to sink your teeth right into and to get your mouth watering. Delicious beautiful baking can put a smile on anyones face.

Summer 2013 saw me train for a month at Leiths, gaining a distinction in practical cookery and last summer I ran a culinary arts course in the USA, specialising in baking.

I am now back in the UK, writing for my blog from sunny Yorkshire. 2015 is going to be a big year for Red Velvet Baking, so keep posted!

Keep calm, enjoy and most importantly BAKE!

APP REVIEW: Urbanspoon

Hey foodies,

So recently I have been trying a few new foodie apps and looking forward towards the 2014/15 food app trends. In May, Urbanspoon launched and as far as I am aware, it is doing really well and to be honest, I was impressed too!

I really enjoyed trialling this app and also cannot wait to try it out in New York, this coming August. The app tracked my location and brought up all the local eateries in the local vicinity and as recently I lived temporarily in London and then came back up to Sheffield - it has been really useful!

You can browse restaurants by cuisine, dining time of day or price and there are selected picks of the “hottest in London”, “Nearest You”, “Celebrity Favourites”, “Bargain Gems”, “Top Picks” and “Picks from a Local”. I was able to view nearly all the restaurants within walking distance and plan for dining out experiences at places rated by professionals and locals. I think this is a really important feature, especially for places out of the capital, like Sheffield, as people tend to stick to chain restaurants, as it is what they know and it is such a shame!

This app opens up a wide variety of choices for people to see reviews and recommendations of people who live in the area, encouraging people to choose more local, independent restaurants and cafes, which are fantastic and potentially better than chain restaurants, using fresh, local produce. I felt a lot safer choosing a new location, knowing it had been rated and reviewed by others in my position and felt more comfortable exploring the less established eateries in the area.

My only difficulty was browsing other city locations, other than the one I am currently in. I wanted to be able to plan ahead for places in New York for example, before I get there. I think this is something that could be worked upon and may be a future feature, as the app is taking on more and more restaurants each day, adding to a vast catalogue of eateries around the world.

I think this app has fantastic potential and cannot wait to take it over seas! It is FREE to download so check it out foodies!

Keep calm and get your Urbanspoon on.

Love,

Jess xo
